Carmel Up Close

I am going to be analysing a college magazine.

The target audience for this magazine is for college kids. We know this because the master head is called "Carmel up close" and Carmel is a college in the north east . The cover includes an anchorage text which says carmel college is one of the top ten colleges in the country.

The Magazine engages the target audience by having a very colourful background and masthead that catches the readers eye and connotes a happy atmosphere of the college.
The priorities of this magazine is to catch the readers eye and to persuade the readers that carmel college is a fun educational place to go. The cover is trying to get the message that carmel college is highly respected in the UK.§ Anchorage text saying the word "Result"which helps the readers understand what the main image connotes.

The image that is used is a girl preferably a student looking pleased of exited because she has opened her results. A medium shot is used to show the girls facial expressions and what is in her hands. The mise en scene show the girl wearing very youthful clothes and her facial expressions shows us that she is very over enthusiastic. Everyone in the background is wearing very plain clothing which makes the girl stand out. This connotes that carmel college can help you develop your knowledge and as a person in general and help you stand out.

The cover engages the audience by using a very soft heading and masthead and using very youthful colours. It also shows a teenager getting good results which all teenagers want to achieve.
The content reflects the cover as they are using the same colours and images from the cover to keep the theme of the magazine throughout the magazine.

Magazine Terminology

In this new post i am going to be talking about the different titles and covers of magazine contains, below i am going to explain them all:

Masthead - The main title of the magazine, It is always on the front cover.

Banner - To promote something exclusive for example an interview which they want the reader to identify.

The Main Image - Is the image in the centre of the front page, the picture is usually of a person who will probably have an exclusive interview and a couple of pictures inside the magazine. The main image is the product which sells the magazine.

Buzzword - Usually promotes something that is exclusive or for example where a magazine has a prize to win in will usually say the word "WIN" to promote something the reader can get for free.

Headline - The headline is the main piece of text on the cover of the magazine. The headline will promote the main image on the cover.

Barcode - A code and convention - a barcode is on every cover of every magazine it tells us the price and overall quality of the magazine. A barcode helps the customers understand that this item needs to be paid for. It can also tell the reader which company distributes the magazine.

Anchorage text - usually found underneath the headline and helps the customers understand the headline and the main image.

Feminism

T
he masthead is in a bold red font with a black background to catch the readers eye.The main image of this cover is Beth Ditto and she is not that feminine as she is not the usual shape of the women you see on the cover of magazines. She has hairy armpits witch is not very feminine. But she is very curvy which connotes feminism.

Even thought the main image is not very feminine it is on the sexual side with Beth Ditto being naked and a lipstick stain on her bottom connotes sexuality.
Laura mulving's male gaze states that males see woman as objects and not as equals. This cover serves as an anomaly due to the fact you never see woman such as beth ditto portrayed in such a manner, within the male gaze.

The term Feminism comes from the eighteenth century which eventually lead into the Suffragette movement, fighting for the vote for women in the early part of the twentieth century. Despite this; the sex equality act was not passed until 1975.

Laura Mulvey and The Male Gaze

This theory consists of the idea that cinema audiences look at films in two different ways:

- Voyeuristically
- Fetishistically

Laura Mulvey argues that people who attend the cinema in this day and age watch a film without being watched by the characters on screen and usually in a darkened cinema, making them invisible to other audience members. Because of this, we are almost voyeurs, watching the people on the screen which can ultimately lead to two effects:

Objectification of female characters in relation to this controlling (male) gaze.

Narcissistic identification with an ideal image seen on the screen.
